World War 2 saw great advances in aviation technology. The airplane won or lost battles. Troops and passengers were carried by air, but ship and rail remained the most common form of transportation. After World War 2, airlines began to develop, but were still inaccessible to the average person. The late 1950s saw the dawn of the jet age. Aviation was here to stay!

The 1960s and 1970s saw a dramatic increase in air travel. Flying was becoming more affordable for the average person, but remained a luxury. The Boeing 747 was introduced in 1969, bringing the wide-body aircraft into service; greatly increasing the airlines’ capacity for passengers. Aviation had become a big business, but the slightest economic down-turn would cripple the industry. The 1980s and 1990s proved this.

In the 21st century, global trade and travel have greatly increased. Everyone is in a hurry to go places fast, to keep ahead of the competition. Passengers and cargo can no longer travel for days or weeks across and ocean or continent. It has to be done in hours! Only the aviation industry can meet that demand.

Today, every flight on every airline is almost always filled to capacity. Even when there is an economic down-turn, people have to go places fast. Flight Training

Flight training will be conducted in Canada, the United States, South Africa or New Zealand. The student has a large choice of training locations. The student will return to India a very competent pilot, but final steps must be completed. The first is the DGCA conversion. The student receives 45 days of classes to complete this. The next is the airline selection process. This involves 3 months of airline preparation training. The student prepares for the airline’s selection process including interviews, aptitude, simulator and psychometric testing. The Flight Training program of HM Aviation is geared towards success.

Types of Licenses & Ratings

Student Pilot Permit (SPL)

The Student Pilot Permit is the first step in becoming a pilot. It allows the holder the ability to fly an aircraft with an instructor and solo. A student pilot may NOT take passengers.

Private Pilot License (PPL)

This is the first license one obtains, and the beginning of every flying career. One must pass a written and flight test. The private pilot license allows the holder to take passengers flying, but not the right to earn a salary.

Commercial Pilot License (CPL)

The commercial pilot license allows the holder to fly, and get paid for it. It required 200 hours flying experience, and one must pass another written and flight test.

Pilot License

Multi-Engine Rating

The multi-engine rating allows the holder to fly an aircraft with more than one engine. A must for someone aspiring to be a corporate or airline pilot.

Instrument Rating

The instrument rating allows the holder the ability to fly an aircraft in reduced visibility. Airlines and charter companies must be able to fly in almost all weather conditions, and require this rating of all their pilots.

Instructor Rating

The instructor rating allows one to teach students to fly. This is an excellent way to start a fliying career, and training someone to become a pilot is one of the most rewarding experiences one can have.

Airline Transport Pilot (ATPL)

The Airline Transport Pilot License is the highest license a pilot can achieve. It requires a minimum of 1500 hours flying experience. This allows the holder the ability to become pilot in command of an aircraft of any weight.

Instrument Rating

The instrument rating can be completed any time after the private pilot license. Before the instrument rating, the pilot had to fly by reference to ground. As one flies in adverse weather, this becomes impractible.The instrument rating gives the pilot the ability to fly through clouds and in reduced visibility; absolutely essential for airline or charter flying.

The private and commercial licenses give the pilot some training on flying by sole reference to instruments. This falls far short of what is required on the instrument rating.

The candidate must successfully complete a written exam with 70% or higher. A flight test is also required. Although no minimum ground school hours are required, it is recommended that one take some ground school to prepare for the exam and the practical part of the instrument rating.

One must learn to prepare an IFR cross-country flight, using airways or air routes. This involves navigating with radio aids such as VOR, NDB, or GPS. The pilot also must learn holding patterns, and proper entry procedures. Instrument approaches, precision (with vertical guidance), and non-precision (without vertical guidance) must also be mastered. The flight test requires the candidate demonstrate proficiency in these areas.

The instrument rating will open many new doors for the pilot. A pilot must be cautious that his or her aircraft is capable of handling flying in this type of weather, and is protected against such hazards as icing. The pilot must also be sure their skills are always up to par, to handle the situation. The instrument rating is challenging, but well worth it.
