Private Pilot License (PPL) Program

The Private Pilot License allows the holder to fly single-engine aircraft with passengers. The holder may not accept compensation [pay] for flying aircraft. Ratings such as night, instrument and multi-engine may be added to the Private Pilot License. The Private Pilot License is a prerequisite to commencing training for a Commercial Pilot License.



  • Applicant must be at least 17 years old for issuance of Private Pilot License
  • Applicant must hold a Category 3 or higher medical



  • 40 hours of ground school must be completed
  • At least 60% obtained on a written exam on the following subjects [60% required in each subject]
    • Air Law
    • Navigation
    • Meteorology
    • General Knowledge3

    At least 45 hours of flight training including:

    • 17 hours dual (with instructor)
    • 3 hours must be cross-country flying
    • 5 hours instrument training
    • 12 hours solo
    • 5 hours cross-country flying with a flight of at least 150 nautical miles and 2 full-stop landings
    • Student must successfully complete a flight test
    The Course consists of the following:

    Dual Flight Training 35
    Solo Flying 15
    Simulator Training 03
    Ground School 40
    Ground Briefing 10
    The approximate duration of the course is 3 months, but this will vary student by student.
