Airbus vs Boeing

The two main aircraft manufacturers of today are Boeing and Airbus. Boeing has a long history of manufacturing aircraft since Wolrd War 1 to the present era. Boeing’s makes aircraft in the United States. Airbus has entered the scene later. It started making it’s presense felt in the 1970s, and has grown quickly ever since. Airbus operated out of the European Union; with each country making a specified part.

From the pilot’s point of view, the main difference is with the controls. Boeing uses the classic “control column”, whereas Airbus uses a “joystick”. Airbus aircraft are all fly by wire. Any pilot input is transferred to a computer, and the computer will operate the controls. Hence, there is no direct control from the pilot. Boeing used hydraulics and a direct link to the contols. In this case, the pilot does directly operate the controls. In more modern Boeing aircraft, such as the Boeing-777, and Boeing-787, the controls have become fly by wire like the airbus, but the controls still come in the shape of a control column.

Later Boeing-737 and Boeing-747 models have winglets at the end of their wings. The Airbus aircraft have 2 smaller winglets extending upward and downward from the end of their wings; where as the Boeing has a larger winglet extending upwards only. The winglets are abscent on the Boeing-747-8 and the Boeing-777 and Boeing-787 models. All modern existing Airbus aircraft have winglets.

Another noticeable difference is in the undercarriage. The Boeing 777 has 2 main undercarriages, with 6 wheels on each. The airbus 340 has 1 main undercarriage under each wing, with another under the canter of the fuselage, each with 4 wheels.

A slightly less noticeable difference is that Boeing aircraft tend to have pointed features, such as the nose, and cockpit windows (sharp corners on the Boeings, and more rounded or square corners on the Airbus). The nose tends to be more “round”, and less “pointed” on the Airbus aircraft.

In spite of the differences, both aircraft are taking millions of passengers around the world in comfort and safety. People and Airlines will always have their personal preferences, but can rely on either to get them where they want to go.
